EMMY Nominations 2019 - Outstanding Music Supervision

By Napsugar Bardocz / GMS Coordinator 29-Jul-2019

On the occasion of their EMMY nominations in the 'Outstanding Music Supervision' category the GMS caught up with Steven Gizicki, Jasper Leak, Thomas Golubić and Robin Urdang and asked them to tell us a little bit about their work on the nominated projects.

Steven Gizicki / Fosse/Verdon - "Life Is A Cabaret"

"Fosse/Verdon was such a unique challenge and the whole team felt a great responsibility to get it right.  We all grew up as fans of Bob and Gwen’s work; work that inspired all of us to chase our cinematic and musical dreams in the first place.  So my primary focus was on historical accuracy.  All of our song arrangements and vocals needed to live up to the iconic moments we were reproducing.  And the source cues needed to be specific to the time and place and represent Bob and Gwen’s personal tastes and emotional arcs.  I’m hugely indebted to Tommy Kail, Steve Levenson and Joel Fields for the privilege of helping to tell this story.  And especially honored to walk through the fire alongside our Music Director Alex Lacamoire.  I’m so very grateful."

Jasper Leak / Quincy

"My job as Music Supervisor on Quincy was almost as overwhelming as it was inspiring. Sifting through literally thousands of songs and hundreds of albums gave me the most incredible palette of music to choose from when directors Al Hicks and Rashida Jones went in to editing. From cataloging Quincy's incredible body of work, to being at Westlake with Michael Jackson's old band doing re-records of Thriller and Off The Wall, it's easy to look back now and acknowledge that the job was a once in a lifetime experience I feel very fortunate to have had."

Thomas Golubić / Better Call Saul - "Something Stupid"

"Better Call Saul is the most creatively exciting and challenging project of my professional career and I think “Something Stupid” and the original music creation and song placements are the strongest example of the best of our work.  We are tremendously lucky to play such a key role in the storytelling for the series and it was thoroughly encouraging to see our work recognized by the Television Academy.  We are in excellent company with our fellow nominees."

Robin Urdang / The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - "We're Going To The Catskills!"

"We have the most  incredible cast and crew on this show and being on set for the Catskills episodes, with music that I enjoy so much, and with the greatest music team ever was such a blast. Of course though, it was not without its challenges.

Whether you’ve  been to sleep away camp or the Catskills, or not (I went to sleep away for 10 years), this is absolutely reminiscent of the time, the  episode will have the viewers singing and/or laughing to Chicken Fat during Abe’s calisthenics, and experiencing the hot summer nights filled with music, dancing, fireworks and love. "

Congratulations to all these wonderful music supervisors on their EMMY nominations and we wish every one of them the best of luck!
